National Kindle & Koffee Day – June 6th

May 31, 2009 1 comment

Are you a Kindle owner who would like to meet others that share your passion for reading and the Amazon Kindle device? Maybe you are just curious about these e-book readers and would like to see one in person.

Then bookmark your calendar for next Saturday, June 6th starting at 10:00am for the first annual "National Kindle & Koffee Day".

This national event was the idea of Kathy S. from Oregon who posted the suggestion up on the Amazon Kindle Discussion Forum a few weeks ago. She suggested that kindle owners visit their local Starbucks on this date and time to enjoy some coffee, reading and possibly meet up with other kindle readers or people who are just interested in them. Since then the idea is gaining a lot of positive attention.

I will be going to the the Starbucks Coffee shop in Oakhurst, NJ during this event. I will be the one with a Kindle 2 sporting a black skin. Just say "Hi Dave!" and I hope to meet some of your there!

Below is an interactive map of Monmouth County, NJ with all of the Starbucks locations added for your convenience. Click on the markers to get the address, phone number and you can even get driving directions.

Fabulous book

Walsh really changed up his writing style in this book. It seems much more intimate and reader friendly. I am reading this book with a group and it's creating lots of great conversation!

When Everything Changes Change Everything

This book is like a parachute and your mind; if it is not open it won't work. Excellent content if you REALLY want to change!

Waste of Time

by Mary M. De Shon from Kansas City, Missouri on 2010-05-24
I will preface this with the fact that I always provide "MY" fair evaluation. This book was sheer torture to read. It's boring, repetitive, self promoting, never gets to the point and seems to be written by someone who is either high on drugs or so spaced out his vision of life & reality are beyond reason. He said he was living in a tent, panhandling then went to be a NY Times "Best Seller". So you would believe he is going to tell you how to go from living in a tent to being a millionaire. He never tells how he turned his life around. The title caught my eye... when everything changes blah blah blah. However, everything already "HAS" changed. If it changes for the negative it's pretty tough to turn it around. We don't need this guy telling us it's our own fault because our soul decided we should encounter all this dreadful hardship.

Promoting his wife added nothing of value to the book. Her poetry (if that's what you call it) was more rambling than Neale Donald Walsch's. I thought the first Conversation with God book was wonderful. I purchased the next two & was disappointed. I did NOT purchase this book, but pulled it off a shelf at a relative's house who told me in advance to not waste my time. I should have listened.

Don't waste your money. I have lost almost everything I ever loved following the death of my parents & two greedy sisters. I'm living with friends & relatives trying to pull my life back together at the age of 56. I needed constructive input, not ramblings by a self absorbed nut & his wife. Don't waste you time on his website, as it's worse than the book. Calgon take me away!

Too much commercialism

by Deborah J. Finch from Seattle, WA on 2010-05-20
I was excited to receive this book. It started off as a slow read which was okay, because great books start off slowly as well. What I didn't like about it, was the commercial aspect that seemed to repeat itself over and over. I also found it short on substance. Overall I was really disappointed with this book, I expected to get much more than a sales pitch unfortunately.

Life changing - your Internet Success Blue Print

by Eva Davies from North London, UK on 2010-06-22
This book along with Scott's earlier one Internet RichesInternet Riches: The Simple Money-Making Secrets of Online Millionaireswork as the perfect blueprint for anyone looking to realistically make money on the internet. No get rich dreaming here - just pure, logical advice. The other exceptional thing about Scott Fox's approach is the back up material provided on his websites [...]So his information is always 'Evergreen'.

The layout and tone are easy to read and not full of tech speak which would be off put to people new to online business.

If you buy no other books on starting a business online buy these two - you will not be disappointed.

cursory information; really just self-promotional

by a reader from california on 2010-06-15
I get disappointed when I end up wasting my time on books that lack substance. I've been suckered (beware the book reviews) into buying similar low-content, high fluff type reads in the past. I got this one because the topics in the Table of Contents would be of interest to anyone who wants to use Internet marketing to promote their business. However, when I read the actual chapters, the descriptions were incomplete and barely even qualified as a summary. The book merely mentions the existence of online marketing venues leaving readers wondering how to even get started.. but I believe that's what the author intended. It's a tease to lure people to sign up for his products and training courses - and his services are mentioned in too many parts of this book.

I don't mind a professional promoting his/her services, at the end of the book, AFTER producing something truly helpful and instructional. Borrow this from the library instead. You might get a couple ideas from it if you're just starting out marketing on the Internet. To get an idea of how to implement any of the suggestions, you'd need to do research on the Internet (Google to the rescue) or locate books/guides on the specific topic areas.

The Internet moves fast and books published even within the year are quickly outdated. My strategy is to read recently published books as a starting point and then find updated information on the Internet.

Updated 6/17 (Amazon blocked my links and search term references):
YouTube has great tutorials on almost any topic (including the various Internet marketing tools). The visual demonstrations are especially helpful since you get to SEE how it's done. For example, if you want to use LinkedIn to promote your business, you can watch the youtube clip on how to set up a LinkedIn profile and use the features available on that networking site.

As for reading instructional guides, I found these MUCH more useful than Scott Fox's book:

YouTube for Business by Michael Miller (if you want to promote your services or products via video demo)

ProBlogger by Darren Rowse/Chris Garrett (if you like to write - and are good at it). Similar books on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=problogger&x=0&y=0

Starting an Online Business (all-in-one) for Dummies by Shannon Belew/Joel Elad. It's a big book, chock full of great ideas for generating income through the web.

Two stars for e-Riches 2.0 only because it may provide some ideas for those brand new to Internet marketing and online businesses.

Teaching High School students your life changing strategies

by Mark Ballard from Lorain, Ohio on 2010-06-09
Scott have given me the confidence to step out and create a stream of income where I can be a self income producing individual. I have started holding classes with High school student in our church and with area church youth to show them how to create a stream of income and a business model that can carry them through the college years and beyond. I truly believe Scott's concepts can be the breakthrough young inter-city African American kids can use to change the future quality of life and create a wealth opportunity.

After having a successful brick and mortar business that crashed, Scott has given me the guts to get back in the game employee free!

A Must if You're Serious About Growing Your Biz

by Dina Lynch from Boston, MA on 2010-04-29
Like with Internet Riches, Scott brings a very practical, easy to follow approach to succeeding at online business. Not only can you do what he recommends, you understand why it's important to your business. That's powerful! Every case study has something to offer depending on how many times you read the book.

Anyone serious, I mean really serious, about building a powerful, easy to run, successful online business would be crazy not to join Click Millionaires. No other community-and I've been in several- offers this combination of friendly, knowledgeable members, lively discussion and frequent 'helping suggestions' from Scott himself. I've doubled the size of my list in 1 month!

Review your Kindle Book Highlights and Notes Online

May 27, 2009 2 comments

Yesterday, Amazon released a new Website Portal for Kindle owners that enhances the capabilities of their Kindle eBook readers. The key feature is the ability to see your kindle book highlights and notes online. The site does an excellent job of managing your books and displaying your highlights and notes. See screen capture below:

I am sure this feature was strongly influenced by the upcoming Kindle DX reader where students will need the ability to quickly view, print or copy and paste their book notes. There is no cost to using this service which is a nice benefit.

I do find it strange that Amazon has chosen to use a different website URL for this feature instead of accessing it through the "Manage my Kindle" page. Personally, I think this adds some confusion for users but hopefully they will integrate the two pages soon.

I am pleased that Amazon continues to put a strong emphasis on their Kindle products and services. I also look forward to seeing more enhancements to these services in the near future (especially the free ones).

Credibility concerns

by Will Golson from Fort Collins, CO USA on 2010-05-18
While not judging the overall content in the book, there are a couple of items that raise credibility questions.

She suggests typing 'search engine marketing book' into Google (page 22) to see the placement of an ad for the book. It's not there. OK, so perhaps the campaign has been turned off -- was it unsuccessful? Low ROI? In addition, the findability website [...] does not appear in the first 100 organic results -- not a real confidence builder.

The examples throughout the book seemed overly simplistic, e.g., chapter 7. To compensate, page 80 states that fully built out examples will appear on the website. Unfortunately I could not find them.

The anomalies above gave me pause, despite the impression that the techniques in the book are no doubt valuable.

Incomplete Guide to Search Engine Marketing

by W. Ejnes from Long Island, NY on 2010-04-20
I found the title of this book and the book description to be a little misleading. I thought I was purchasing a book that described a complete approach to Search Engine Marketing and SEO. This book devotes practically every chapter to Google AdWords and only one brief final chapter on SEO/improving organic search ranking. In fact, the author even states that an entire second book would be needed to cover the topic. I thought I WAS buying that book based on the product description. On a positive note, this book is great for anyone just getting their feet wet with pay-per-click advertising. The author explains that this should be the first step in getting on the first page of a search engine, but I did not expect the entire book to be on this one subject. I just feel mislead by the book title and the way it was marketed.

SEO & SEM Success Made Easy

by Sean M. Clemence from on 2010-02-01
I am totally impressed with Heather Lutze's ability to translate the world of SEO and SEM into easy-to-implement strategy and tactics. What might have taken me a couple of years to figure out, I am now able to comprehend and apply in a month or two. In fact, two SEO "experts" I talked to did not even know about aligning one's key word terms with the three phases of the customer buying cycle, which is the critical step Heather teaches to managing successful SEO and SEM campaigns. Thank you Heather Lutze!

The Search is Over

by Thomas D. Wirt from Hutchinson, MN USA on 2009-10-18
For years I have asked our web design and management company for the information in this book. It focuses on building effective and efficient site optimization, especially using ad words type functions. But besides improving your web efficiency, you'll be taking a deep consumers eye review of your business. This is by far the best web SEO reference I've found.
