HP joins the eReader Party with the Slate

March 9, 2010 No comments yet

HP just announced and posted up a teaser video on YouTube (see below) of their upcoming Color Tablet eReader called the "Slate" with a full color multi-touch screen display. Now we know why Apple didn't call their eerily similar product now known as the iPad the iSlate.

There are a few key differences that HP mentioned on their Facebook Fan Page. One being that the Slate will support Flash content for web browsing. The other is that since Apple has already set the bar for this type of device, HP will need to one-up them either with features, price or both. Speculation reports that it may run Windows apps. HP has been in the tablet PC market for a long time so I believe this will be a quality product to compete with all the big competitors.

So far there is no release date or price set.

Play Games like GoMoku and Mine Sweeper on your Kindle!

Every once in awhile I need a break from reading and playing a game is a great way to get the brain going again.

The Amazon Kindle 2 and DX both have some undocumented games built into the device. Mine Sweeper has been included since the beginning but with the latest firmware upgrade you can now also play Gomoku. Personally, I never got into Mine Sweeper but Gomoku seems like more fun to me (although I still stink).

To access the games you will need to press and hold the following keys [ ↑ ] [ALT] [M] to bring up mindsweeoer. If you want to play GoMoku, press [G] at the mine sweeper screen to switch games. Pressing [M] again will switch back to Mine Sweeper. Press the HOME button to exit the games.

Overall, I still would rather play the paid Sudoku games by Puzux.

The Sony Reader Daily Edition PRS-900BC

Sony has finally released their first wireless eBook reader known as the Daily Edition. Reviews have been mixed and the price is in between the Kindle 2 & DX but for some, Sony is the brand to own. I also like the 7" screen which to me hits the sweet spot between a Kindle 2 and DX. The Sony Daily Edition is also supports an industry standard ePub format (ePub eBooks available at many websites and sometimes at your local library) and has a replaceable battery. Sony is still not as strong as Amazon in their bookstore offerings, but you can purchase books at many other websites. If product quality is your main concern then this eReader may be the answer.

B&N updates Nook to Version 1.2 – Now has Apple-like Icon Navigation

February 5, 2010 No comments yet

Barnes and Noble announced today a new software update for their Nook eReader to version 1.2. This is the second update since the initial release of the nook back in December.

The update includes several internal changes to help speed up the overall response rate to user actions and they also created one very noticeable change; color icon button navigation. These buttons are starting to look very similar to the iPhone app icons. My guess is that B&N will soon open up their OS to developers similar to what Amazon did and these buttons will allow support for more apps that can be moved back and forth with the touch screen. Other much needed improvements include optimization of battery life and sorting of personal documents and more.

This update will be pushed out wirelessly starting today and throughout the following week. If you can't wait (like me), then you can also manually update your nook by following the Instructions on their website. This is what I did and you will notice a few status screens that you never saw before (see below) but don't be alarmed.

The instructions say after you copy the update file to your Nook and disconnect from your computer, it will automatically update. I waited about 4 minutes and the update didn't start. I finally turned the unit off and restarted it and then within a minute I saw a status that the file was decompressing and installing the update. It really isn't hard to manually update your unit so don't bother waiting for the wireless update.
