The HUGlight Hands-Free Reading Light Review

November 20, 2009 No comments yet

huglightToday's product review is the flexible hands-free reading light known as the HUGlight from MyLight.com. This HUGlight is an innovative design by using flexible arms with two types of LED lights at the end of each arm. You have independent control of the 5-way light source and direction on each flexible arm. The 5-way light controls are:

On | Broad Beam Light | Focus Beam Light | Both Lights | OFF

The HUGlight is designed to "HUG" comfortably around your neck while reading...which it does live up to its name. The HUGlight comes in several colors and the batteries are included. The HUGlight is much more versatile than just a reading light. Watch the following video for my review.

Kindle 2 Invisible Shield Screen Protector Install & Review

June 12, 2009 No comments yet

Invisible Shield for Kindle 2Recently, I purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector for my Kindle 2. I already have a vinyl skin protecting the body of my Kindle, so I just wanted a little more protection for the screen. I have read some stories about people accidentally chipping or scratching the screen and thought this would be a good investment.

First off, I always like to research a manufacturer's product by visiting their website before I buy anything. ZAGG's clear film shields look very durable and they back them with a lifetime warranty. They even have some impressive videos of how well their shields can protect an electronic device. You can check them out for yourself by visiting the ZAGG Website

I ordered the screen protector and received it within 5 business days (using their standard shipping). The product comes complete with everything you need to install it, including the Invisible Shield, spray applicator with solution, squeegee and box with instructions.

Installation

Next I washed my hands and got prepared to install the shield. I read on a couple of discussion boards that some people were running into problems installing the full-body Invisible Shield, which is one of the reasons I opted for the screen-only shield. These are a little different then installing a vinyl skin, so I was sure to read all of the instructions first. I found the installation to be quite easy. Check out the video below to see the full installation process.

Review

I have no doubts that this screen protector will do an excellent job protecting the kindle 2 screen from scratches and chips. I was concerned how the shield would affect
the look of the screen text. The screen protector is completely clear and I didn't notice any issues with blurry text or the screen looking faded. I did notice on small slight manufacturer's defect on the bottom edge of the screen protector but I will tell you more about that later in this article.

Here is a before and after picture of the same kindle under the same lighting conditions.

There was one negative side effect that I am not too keen about. The Invisible Shield does have a shiny surface to it which does create more reflections on the screen than without it (see picture below). I have used the kindle for a few days now and for the most part the slight reflections are not a big problem.

Warranty

Now, back to the issue of the defect. There was a slight raised crease in the corner of the shield that I know wasn't created during the installation. So I sent a courteous email to ZAGG's customer support explaining the problem and to see if that would be covered under their Lifetime Replacement Warranty. I am happy to report that they responded within 24 hours and had already shipped out a replacement shield. Now, that is how customer support should be. The only thing you must do is ship them back the defective shield once it has been removed. They only want the plastic shield (no other contents) so it can be easily shipped via first class mail in an envelope.

I have now removed the old protector which did require a little effort since it really clings to the screen. Just be sure to wipe down the screen to remove any streaks caused by the removal but it does clean up nicely.

Final Thoughts

I do like the idea of protecting the screen and I feel that ZAGG makes an excellent product and they stand behind their claims. I only wish they had one without the glossier finish. Still, I recommend it if you have a habit of dropping things onto your kindle or like placing it in a bag where it may get scratched up.

Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 makes your Kindle 2 Shine with Light

Today's product review is the Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Dual LED Reading Light. This handy little light easily adjusts with a flexible metal arm that clips to your Kindle 2. The clip base is also designed to be used as a free-standing light. The dual light led provides plenty of light in the darkest of places. This XtraFlex2 light weighs just 3 ounces (including batteries). The light includes a one year limited warranty and is highly recommended for anyone who reads at night in bed who doesn't want to disturb others who may be sleeping.

Please Note: The Mighty Bright has a Kindle specific light (in black) which is shown here. They do have a variety of other XtraFlex2 lights in several colors that may or may not be suitable for use with your Kindle. I believe the Kindle version has a longer clip base.

Watch my Kindle 2 Take a Bath!

Do you like to read in the bathtub or at the beach? Many people do but getting your Kindle 2 wet or dropping it in the sand could render it useless.

Although, all is not lost. Today I will show you how to keep your Kindle 2 dry and safe even in the most adverse conditions.

Many campers and people who go canoeing or kayaking use a product like Dry-Pak to keep their personal items like cell phones & cameras safe from the elements. After a little research I found that the 9"x12" size works well for the Kindle ebook readers. I also recommend using Silica Gel Packets to absorb any moisture that may be caught inside.

Happy Easter! My Kindle saved me $10 Today!

April 12, 2009 No comments yet

I hope everyone had a Happy & Safe Easter!

I spent the weekend down in Washington, D.C. I have to say...what a wonderful city. Before my trip I bought Frommer's - Washington, D.C. City Guide. I found the guide very helpful and the resturant recommendations are right on. They have several maps (easy to view) which were helpful.

If you get a chance be sure to visit the Georgetown section if you are into great food and shopping. The weather wasn't cooperating on Saturday but Easter Sunday was great.

So you are probably wondering how my Kindle 2 saved me $10. Well, the Hyatt hotel I was staying at charges ten dollars for their wireless access and all I wanted to do was check my emails with my laptop. Then I remembered that my Kindle has wireless Internet access at no charge. I was able to access my online email service through their mobile website and all was well. It payed for my city guide in just one day!

Tip: If you plan on driving in Washington, D.C. may sure you have a GPS unit for your car. It makes it a lot easier to navigate as the roads can get a little confusing.
