Buyer Beware…Your Kindle TTS may now be disabled

Posted on May 14, 2009

A couple of months ago, Amazon pushed out an update to allow publishers and authors to disable the Text to Speech feature that is included in the Kindle 2 and upcoming Kindle DX. This was the solution Amazon chose to impliment to satisfy the needs and concerns of the publishers and is set individually on each book.

The big question is...How will you know if a book is TTS disabled?

We now have an answer. Amazon now includes a small notice on the item page for the Kindle book stating that the Text to Speech is disabled. See screen shot below.

I appreciate that Amazon is letting their customers know when this feature is disabled on a Kindle book. I do feel that it may hurt sales of certain books but ultimately that is the decision of the author and/or publisher.
