Kindle 2 Invisible Shield Screen Protector Install & Review

Posted on June 12, 2009

Invisible Shield for Kindle 2Recently, I purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector for my Kindle 2. I already have a vinyl skin protecting the body of my Kindle, so I just wanted a little more protection for the screen. I have read some stories about people accidentally chipping or scratching the screen and thought this would be a good investment.

First off, I always like to research a manufacturer's product by visiting their website before I buy anything. ZAGG's clear film shields look very durable and they back them with a lifetime warranty. They even have some impressive videos of how well their shields can protect an electronic device. You can check them out for yourself by visiting the ZAGG Website

I ordered the screen protector and received it within 5 business days (using their standard shipping). The product comes complete with everything you need to install it, including the Invisible Shield, spray applicator with solution, squeegee and box with instructions.

Installation

Next I washed my hands and got prepared to install the shield. I read on a couple of discussion boards that some people were running into problems installing the full-body Invisible Shield, which is one of the reasons I opted for the screen-only shield. These are a little different then installing a vinyl skin, so I was sure to read all of the instructions first. I found the installation to be quite easy. Check out the video below to see the full installation process.

Review

I have no doubts that this screen protector will do an excellent job protecting the kindle 2 screen from scratches and chips. I was concerned how the shield would affect
the look of the screen text. The screen protector is completely clear and I didn't notice any issues with blurry text or the screen looking faded. I did notice on small slight manufacturer's defect on the bottom edge of the screen protector but I will tell you more about that later in this article.

Here is a before and after picture of the same kindle under the same lighting conditions.

There was one negative side effect that I am not too keen about. The Invisible Shield does have a shiny surface to it which does create more reflections on the screen than without it (see picture below). I have used the kindle for a few days now and for the most part the slight reflections are not a big problem.

Warranty

Now, back to the issue of the defect. There was a slight raised crease in the corner of the shield that I know wasn't created during the installation. So I sent a courteous email to ZAGG's customer support explaining the problem and to see if that would be covered under their Lifetime Replacement Warranty. I am happy to report that they responded within 24 hours and had already shipped out a replacement shield. Now, that is how customer support should be. The only thing you must do is ship them back the defective shield once it has been removed. They only want the plastic shield (no other contents) so it can be easily shipped via first class mail in an envelope.

I have now removed the old protector which did require a little effort since it really clings to the screen. Just be sure to wipe down the screen to remove any streaks caused by the removal but it does clean up nicely.

Final Thoughts

I do like the idea of protecting the screen and I feel that ZAGG makes an excellent product and they stand behind their claims. I only wish they had one without the glossier finish. Still, I recommend it if you have a habit of dropping things onto your kindle or like placing it in a bag where it may get scratched up.
